This is a competence-based qualification, it is not a theoretical training course and there is no Exam!
This qualification is intended for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding in a workshop, classroom, or other training environment other than assessing competence in a work environment.
There must be evidence to cover all of the assessment methods listed in the units.
The purpose of this qualification is to confirm competence in an occupational role to the standards required.
You can start your NVQ at any time and they typically take a maximum of 9 months to complete.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for NVQs but:
- You need to have a good standard of English language
- You must have access to two learners to assess in the classroom and workplace for Unit 2 and Unit 3.
Age Restrictions
There are no age limits attached to candidates undertaking the qualifications unless this is a legal requirement of the process or the environment in which they operate. However, it is not expected that candidates for these qualifications would be younger than 18.
Structure
There are 3 units in this qualification:
Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (3 credits)
Unit 2: Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment (6 credits)
Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge, and Understanding (6 credits)
Depending on the initial assessment (explained below) you can choose to take and complete:
- Only Unit 1 for Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment (3 credits);
- Only Unit 1 & Unit 2 for Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (9 credits);
- Only Unit 1 & Unit 3 for Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement (9 credits);
- Unit 1, 2, and Unit 3 for Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (15 credits).
Initial Assessment
To enroll on the City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Qualifications in Assessment you will need to complete a short self-assessed questionnaire (Skill Scan) before we can accept you on the course.
It will help you to identify which one of the 3 awards and 1 certification program is right for you;
It will also help TCS to identify:
- any specific learning needs you have, and the support and guidance you may require when working towards the qualification.
- any units you have already completed
- any units or parts of units that may cause difficulties for you e.g. if your job role or level of experience is not sufficiently wide-ranging for you to meet the requirements
Assessment Process
Time Constraints:
You must finish your assessment within your registration period. It usually takes a maximum of 9 months.
Process:
The qualification is broken down into 3 units; each unit has its own assessment criteria and you gather evidence to demonstrate you have met the criteria. You will be assigned an assessor who will guide you on what you need to do and what evidence you need. Your assessor may set you tasks to help you gather the right evidence. You also need to have access to 2 learners for units 302 and 303.
Evidence must be all your own work but is typically things such as documents, videos, photographs, witness statements, etc.

Using ELS platform you will be able to upload your evidence from anywhere at a time that suits you – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. After you upload your evidence your assessor can view and assess it online. You will achieve your NVQ when you have covered the required number of units and your achievements have been confirmed by internal and external verifiers.
